Nancy Valentine Connects with Homes to Tell Their Story
At first glance, it may seem that practicing real estate and being a professional opera singer don’t have much in common. For Top Agent Nancy Valentine, however, the connection is clear.
After a successful singing career in Europe, she got her first introduction to real estate in New York when her attorney father asked her to help settle an estate by a his client’s home for sale. What she discovered was a classic 1930’s Long Island horse stable, partially renovated. Nancy pieced together the unrealized dreams of the deceased owner and presented a vison for transforming it into an elegant country home.
She used her flair for the dramatic to make that vision a reality. Her presentation resulted in a spirited bidding war and a sale at $250,000 above the asking price. That success was the spark and excitement that led Nancy to become a licensed REALTOR®.
Real estate is a natural fit for Nancy, who uses her opera background when marketing homes. “I look at the scene and bring out the natural beauty,” Nancy says.
“In theater, you prepare for a role long before you walk on stage. We use sets, lights and costumes to enhance the story, and the same is true in real estate.” Nancy explains.
Long before the first potential buyer steps through the door, the home must be prepared for opening night,” she says. “The goal is to connect with the home and bring it to life. This is what resonates with buyers. I just love to create the magic that maximizes value.”
Clients are impressed by the quality of Nancy’s marketing, her enthusiasm, high energy and attention to detail. “I try to understand the soul behind the house and introduce new people into it who will continue that story, perhaps taking it in a new direction.”
Nancy is a member of PFAC, the Professional Fiduciary Association of California. She was a speaker at their Statewide Convention in 2020. She has also recently given Webinars with other professional son timely topics such as Prop 19 and How to move during COVID. She is proud to have been the official Real Estate Sponsor of the Pasadena Bar Association for five years: she was chosen because of her extensive experience in dealing with handling complex probate, trust, and divorce sales.
There’s drama in those type of transactions, but rather than being put off by it, she embraces it. It’s like an opera! She seeks to understand the unspoken, hidden motivations that drive people’s actions. Oftentimes the parties disagree but she builds trust and that allows her to help the clients move forward.
As one attorney put it: “She is a consummate real estate professional with an amazing capacity for detail and endless energy to spare for her listings.”
The highest compliment she gets is that she is often called on by the attorneys she works with to sell their own personal properties or those of their families, not just their clients’.
For Nancy, the most rewarding part of being a REALTOR is the people. “I love helping my clients and their families and getting to know their stories,” she says. “I’m privileged to assist multiple generations in many families.”
Nancy believes her ability to really listen to clients and help them understand the process is something that sets her apart. “Selling a home is very emotional,” she explains. “I listen to my clients’ concerns and fears and help them get through the process. Often it is what people don’t say that you have to hear,” she continues. “I believe they are grateful to feel understood.”
Looking to the future, Nancy is eager to find more homes with stories to develop and share. She loves to talk about real estate and looks forward to more webinars. “Imagine that, a performer who loves to be in front of an audience,” she laughs.
