Sequoyah is a coeducational Kindergarten through 12th grade independent day school in Pasadena, California, where students thrive in an inclusive, diverse community supported by a progressive approach to learning. Offering a college-preparatory curriculum in a student-centered, experiential environment, Sequoyah is a school where students are appreciated for their individuality of thought, experience, and expression.
Attending school in a nurturing, supportive learning environment helps students develop self-confidence and a love of learning. Kindergarten through 8th grades at Sequoyah begin with peer groupings in mixed-age classrooms, which span two years. Each year, new groupings create opportunities for second-year students to develop leadership skills and incoming students to experience the challenge and excitement of working with older children. This creates lasting relationships across grade levels and fosters academic and personal growth in students as they enter their junior high school years in 7th and 8th grades.
At the high school, teachers challenge students to identify and make connections, communicate ideas, develop meaningful relationships, and become changemakers who know how to inspire collaboration and lead innovation. Sequoyah high school students develop initiative and self-direction through college preparatory coursework that integrates outdoor education and experiential learning through dynamic four-year programs: Field Studies and Social Innovation Program.
At Sequoyah, each child is known. The interaction between teacher and student is as important as the subject matter, reflected in a low student-teacher ratio and a developmentally appropriate program that intertwines social and emotional learning with academic progress. Teachers at Sequoyah possess the expertise to develop curriculum and apply strategies that foster critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, inquiry, and application.
Highlighting a place-based approach, Sequoyah utilizes the surrounding community as the context for teaching and learning. Education is regarded as the preparation for active citizenship while reinforcing the skills for continued scholarship. On field trips and camping trips at each grade level, students are immersed in local heritage, culture, and landscape. An emphasis on social justice and the application of knowledge and skills to contemporary issues extend from kindergarten to high school.
Sequoyah welcomes families who wish to play an active, partnering role with the school and whose children will thrive in a collaborative environment. The school is an intentionally diverse community whose classrooms include a range of individual experience – race, ethnicity, sexual identity, family background, and economic circumstance.
A Sequoyah School education challenges the mind, nurtures the heart, and celebrates human dignity.
